Thermal Sprayed Aluminium (TSA)

Barrier is the leading applicator of TSA for the offshore and onshore oil and petrochemical industries. The company has over 30 years experience of both gas and arc equipment.

Phillips Judy/Joanne offshore topsides is the largest TSA project in the UK sector of the North Sea. At over 100,000 m2 it represented a huge investment, but with an excellent record offshore.

Factory-applied TSA on exhaust ducts and heat exchangers is standard work for Barrier. A more challenging project was the in-situ TSA application on the Arc Royal naval vessel during refit. This was carried out quickly and to the highest standards,  and with no unnecessary disruption.

Working to the Norwegian NORSOK standard is becoming the norm for the worldwide offshore industry. Barrier has worked to this standard in Norway itself, in the UK, and worldwide.

Fire Protection

Barrier carries out passive fire protection contracts using all the leading and tested products, backed by supporting technical and installation services from within the Barrier Group.

Our fire protection systems comprise of both thick and thin film intumescent coatings developed for blast and jet fire resistance specifications. These may be pinned and metal meshed, or glass and carbon fibre cloth reinforced.

Vermiculite and Gunite coatings can be applied to structural steelwork for Petrochemical and Industrial Sites.

Other systems are used, including Jackets for valves and actuators, Fire Seals for deck and bulkhead penetrations and Fireboards.

Fire Seal

Barrier has long specialised in the use of RTV Foams for Fire Seals. Both Studsvik and Dow Corning materials are used to provide a fire resistant penetration.

Bestobell seals can also be applied by the company, as well as jackets and mats.

Powder Coating

Barrier has a specialist facility comprising of 7,760 square meters of covered area on a 2.05 hectare site, dedicated to providing high quality coatings for all aspects of fabricated steelwork, pipework, vessels and tanker linings for the offshore and onshore oil and petrochemical industries.

The Powder Coating plant has a 13 meters long oven and can apply industrial powder coatings to CW6 specification on up to 2 meter diameter pipe bends. These coatings include FBE, three layer polypropylene and polyethylene and various flowcoats.

Barrier is now the leading applicator for FBE in the UK for both onshore gas lines and offshore oil and gas.

Scaffolding and Specialist Access

Scaffolding is supplied as a support service to the other divisions. The company also provides containment for ships and tanks.

Barrier are currently providing all scaffolding, access and containment for three nuclear submarines for BAE Systems at Barrow.

For environmental reasons it is often necessary to totally encapsulate a structure. Barrier has successfully worked in the most difficult situations, including nuclear submarines and in northern Norway at -32 c, painting oil storage tanks.

Rope Access is provided by our subcontractor Abfad Ltd. and cradles are supplied by Sovereign Access Ltd. These have been highly cost-effective on large tanks where traditional scaffold is too slow and expensive.

The company also has its own mobile access platforms for work to ships' hulls and other similar structures.

Insulation

Barrier carries out insulation work as part of a multi-discipline approach. This includes traditional Rockwool systems as well as more advanced materials such as foamed rubber for pipework and syntactic epoxies under jet-fire rated PFP.

A recent addition to our range of services is dry lining and acoustic walling. The Company also carries out sprayed Polyurethane Foam insulation.

Subsea Insulation

The company has successfully diversified into the subsea market over the past few years. This has involved new expertise and equipment, including a state-of-the-art Gas Oven for FBE coating of pipes, bends and tees.

With our vast experience in moulding PFP, it was a natural progression to carry out subsea insulation coatings. Both syntactic epoxy (SE) and syntactic polyurethane (SPU) can be moulded, as well as solid polyurethane (PU).

Three-layer PE and PP are also carried out to pipework, as well as sprayed PU and traditional coatings.

Work is carried out to various standards, including British Gas CW6, CM10 and PA1.
